Distributed Operating Systems is usually described as servers that you install on your own hardware and run as your own system. Cloud Computing is also known as Web 2.0, which uses a variety of technologies including HTML, CGI, JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets, JSON and XML. There are other technologies available that are similar to Web 2.0 but have not yet reached the mainstream. They include social networking, hybrid cloud computing, collaborative workspace software, content management systems and remote data transfer. Cloud Computing also has a very wide variety of service models to choose from. Many providers offer only virtual private servers (VPS) or virtual-dedicated servers (VDS) as well as managed services, hosted apps, managed servers, managed clouds, managed clouds.

As opposed to a Shared Hosting Service that places websites on a number of different servers, which may not have the same degree of redundancy and the ability to scale down quickly if a server goes offline. Shared Hosting services can be expensive to run and if one goes offline the others may suffer as well.
Managed clouds are a combination of shared and managed services where the hosting company has some control over the services that are offered. With this type of service, the customer is given more control over what features are available and the services they can utilize to get the most out of their system.
Managed clouds are a great way to minimize the cost of hosting and are commonly preferred by large corporations. They are often the cloud of choice when a company is on a budget and does not have the ability to dedicate resources to the operating system as a small company would. The bottom line of managed clouds is more money spent on the cloud than a company would spend on hosting its own servers.
